When is a resignation, not a resignation? In Washington, of course. President Obama announced a statement about the IRS during the 5 pm hour EDT yesterday. It was supposed to be a 6 pm. Two minutes before 6, they gave the 2 minute warning. But, in Obama-time, that means 20 to 40 minutes later than that. In the statement, the president said he wouldn’t tolerate conservative groups being targeted, and one of the measures he was taking was to ask for and accept the resignation of the acting commissioner of the IRS, Steven Miller. So how is it not a resignation? When the acting commissioner’s term ends in June and his “resignation” takes effect at the end of that term. He’s just moving on.

In the wake of the IRS scandal, this is what we know. The former Commissioner of the IRS, Douglas Shulman said in March 2012 when asked by Rep. Tom Graves (Ga-14), there was no targeting of conservative organizations. In the campaign last year, Sen. Harry Reid, from the floor of the Senate, seemed to know how much in taxes Mitt Romney paid and the Koch brothers paid, before any tax returns were released. Finally on Friday, Lois G. Lerner, who oversees tax-exempt groups for the IRS, told reporters Friday that the “absolutely inappropriate” actions were undertaken by “front-line people” working in Cincinnati to target groups with “tea party,” “patriot” or “9/12” in their names.
